Planting Condition:
Sowing and Growing:
Buttercrunch lettuce is ready to harvest in about 55-65 days from sowing. Although it tolerates heat better than other lettuces, it should still be planted early in spring or later in the fall season. Seeds may be sown indoors a few weeks prior to the last frost for your area. Sow seeds 8" apart in partial shade or an area of eastern exposure, if possible, in fertile soil. Space plants about 10-12" apart with a foot between rows.
Harvesting:
Once the full head reaches maturity, you can harvest it all at once by pulling it out with the roots intact. This is often how it’s sold in grocery stores, and keeping the roots keeps the head fresher longer. You can also cut off the majority of the head with a sharp plant, if you only want the center behind. This way, it will continue to grow new leaves from the center. Using those leaves will continue to grow new leaves from the once they turn green, the freshest leaves at a time, you can pick the outer leaves being attached to the roots and aren’t ideal for storing.
Pests and Disease:
Crop rotation is important for disease prevention. Tip burn (tips of leaves turning brown) is caused by a calcium deficiency. If you have this problem, it may be early in the season, so clean up imbalances or lack of moisture. Slugs are a problem in early and late plantings.
