Planting Condition:
Sowing and Growing:
Sow seed 1/8" deep, 1" apart in rows 12-18" apart. When plants have two or three true leaves, thin to 12" spacings for crisphead varieties, 6-10" for other types. You can also lightly broadcast seed (particularly of looseleaf varieties) in a patch instead of a row.
Harvesting:
Start using the leaves as soon as they are big enough to pick, or allow it to form small loose heads. If you are able to leave some stem behind when harvesting, they may resprout.
Pests and Disease:
Common pests include aphids, leafminers, slugs, cabbage caterpillars, and so on; common diseases include sclerotinia, soft rot, leaf scorch, etc.
